It appears that the Russians have moral authority on the battlefield. Moral authority is a premise based on a reality rather than written law. The reality is that when the Ukrainians and Russians are brought to battle, the Russians invariably win and inflict large numbers of casualties.
The Ukrainians now understand this hence the dispondency.
