We are on Via Santa Chiara, it is lunchtime, and the place is crowded. At the
tables are an Israeli couple, next to them a family - apparently - of French
tourists. The Israelis certainly did not realize they were in a place that
adheres to the "Spaces Free from Israeli Apartheid" campaign, with
obvious reference to the situation of the war in Gaza. Clear message: Israelis
are not welcome here, which is not exactly the height of tourist hospitality.
Apparently, the discussion only degenerates at the end of the meal consumed by
the two Middle Easterners. But let's get to the video, which begins with
Mrs. Monda"s remark: "Yes, I am very proud of this," she says to the Israeli
tourist, Gilli Moses, who replies: "You hate Jews." All this under the
astonished eyes of the other customers. It is clear that the argument arises
because "Zionists" are not welcome here: a serious matter in itself, considering
that in a city of hospitality, barriers cannot be raised in the name of the
passport one holds or the faith one professes.
To better clarify the facts, we contacted the restaurant owner by phone last
night. "If you want - she replies - come here and we will talk face to face. I
hope you provide a correct reconstruction of the facts." I can only say that we
talked, and the lady replied that I am a supporter of terrorists." Nives Monda
denies anti-Semitic sentiments and clarifies that the table of people seen
leaving the establishment in the video was entirely composed of Israeli
citizens. "The Israelis - she adds to "Il Mattino" - were only two, a couple,
the others were French. This is not a restaurant, but a solidarity
place." The restaurant owner publishes a post that needs no comments:
"Just had a discussion with two foreign tourists: at the end of the meal,
they start talking to the table next to them saying they are Israelis, how
beautiful Israel is, and to go visit it. At that point, I understand, I approach
and tell them to join the campaign against Israeli apartheid and against the
Palestinian genocide, and at that point, they start attacking me with arrogance,
accusing me of anti-Semitism and threatening me, recording everything with their
cell phone."
"What we experienced - explains the Israeli lady - is simply shameful. We have
witnessed firsthand what anti-Semitism and feelings of anger and hatred towards
us Israelis are. Just because we are Jews and Israelis.
