'[Far right populists] aim to channel the multifarious resentments of a population into a ‘revolt against liberal civilisation’; in other words, into ‘barbarism’.'
But later he acknowledges that there is plenty of scope for barbarism within the current system, using Thatcher as an example. The wrecking of the climate, the smashing of the working class, the enslavement of everybody on the planet to the dictates of market fundamentalism, constant war and 'counter-insurgency' leading to full-on genocide - all have been achieved under the much-vaunted 'liberal civilisation'. It's like the Jimmy Dore line in response to claims that Trump was going to be worse for Palestine than Biden was: 'What is he going to do, dig them up and kill them again?' (paraphrase).
Otherwise I note that he follows the dismissal of covid critics as 'conspiracy theorists' (many of the 'conspiracies' turned out to be correct, and the left was almost completely absent, so no wonder the right filled the space), and Putin gets fingered for his own 'authoritarianism' whereas there's not a word about perhaps the most prominent neo-nazi movement in the world: in Ukraine. I wonder if Seymour discusses it? I can't read enough of his stuff to find out before my brain gives up...
cheers,
I
