1. In th 1985-1986 term, Cindy Hamilton, the US American Lit lecturer said, "role model" and no-one knew what she meant. She was aghast and when she defined it, someone at the back said "oh, you mean an example".

2. When a Hull trawlerman had his funeral, a parson tried to get the 300-odd people there to sing a song and about three old dears joined in. The rest of us waited for them to finish and carried on with the proceedings.

3. When I did a fork-lift truck course the tutor said that because of the "Prevent Strategy" we had to take part. I thought that I would have my say once and shut up. I didn't need to because the crowd wouldn't have it. I've never met a working-class group more aware of the hypocrisy of the state or to reject it so thoroughly. We got sent out to a tea break and on our return the bloke said that it had to be done but he would abbreviate it to the minimum. He said he'd never been given the bird that bad. ;O)
