He probably became a practising Christian as a result of trying to fix his alcohol and drug addictions by attending 12 step programs which were first created by US Catholics. The whole thing is simply inundated with Catholicism.

When you attend AA meetings nearly everybody talks about God and higher powers. It's no coincidence that most meetings are held in church halls. It's all too easy to become fanatical about religion and the bible. And from there to support Israel.
