All the time I lived there (while the old king was still on the throne) the tales of his evil son circulated with people dreading what he would get up to when the old man popped his clogs. It seems they've managed to keep him in check but he is an absolute shit head.

And the Shinawatras are also oligarch scum of the lowest order; constantly fooling large enough segments of the population into thinking they give the first glimmer of a fuck about them (usually by bunging them some loose change from the back of the settee). Thaksin was in power part of the time I was there and he was responsible for the "war on drugs" campaign which basically just involved pigs killing loads of low-level dealers and dopers sometimes waiting for the camera crews to arrive so it could be shown live (in one infamous case they brought them out of this shack in the middle of a field to parade them around, took them back in and then you heard shots and they claimed the handcuffed suspects tried to escape and they had to shoot them.

Thing is even if these two disappear into exile (again) there's a massive line of similar scum just waiting to step up and start exploiting the poor. The class divide in Thailand is humungous.
