Not sure about the confession quote, but Ritter's point about people being politically stupid while at the same time they know every fine detail about the sports they love, well I am sure I remember Chomsky talk about exactly that, years ago.
"I won't dignify the attacker's words by repeating them, they are horrific and vile."
