It's also in flux; we've gone from Sheldon Wolin's "inverted totalitarianism" to tech-bro/oligarchy/ populist/authoritarian something or other. We may not have a name for it yet, but we know we don't want it and it doesn't give a fuck about us.

I personally think "they" know what's coming (climate change migration, AI powered unemployment on a never seen scale, civil disorder as everyone scrambles to stay afloat, etc.) and they are moving to a more authoritarian stance to be able to stamp on whoever they want when it all kicks off. Not the most rounded, precise theory ever but it feels right to me.
