Trump is now saying Iran can't have any ballistic missiles, and he is
threatening to send another carrier strike group to the Middle East.
As I have mentioned previously, Iran's ballistic missile program is
inviolable. They will absolutely go to war rather than disarm themselves of
their greatest military asset.
As for an additional aircraft carrier, Trump only has one option: order CSG-10
(USS George H. W. Bush CVN-77) to the Mediterranean. The problem is that CSG-10
just commenced its Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), which is the
final preparation for deployment. Unless ordered to dispense with its normal
pre-deployment schedule, CSG-10 will not be ready to deploy for 6 - 8 weeks.
Even if COMPTUEX is cut short, it would take the strike group a few weeks to get
underway to the Mediterranean.
So, unless Trump is ready to postpone his Iran war for another month or so,
there will be no additional carrier sent to the Middle East.
In the immortal words of Donald Rumsfeld:
"You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to
have at a later time."
Whatever force the US has been able to concentrate in the region already is all
they're going to have if they want to start a war in time for Valentine's Day.
