rather than giving a blanket "nothing to see here" reponse. It does seem that it's a conflation of several not really related incidents at heart, but some of it is pretty weird:

Another scientist, Monica Reza, disappeared in June last year. She served as director of the Nasa lab’s materials processing group. She had set out on a hike in the Angeles national forest with a companion. A police report said Reza, 60, was about 30ft behind her friend when she disappeared. Her body was never found.

If a cougar took her then maybe that would make sense but there would be some traces and signs. I think they have deliberately left it concise to elevate the mystery. They seem to be wanting to debunk but whistle the them from the x-files at the same time.
