the five-second epistemology of: pompeo and nuland won · sorry, anti-imperialist
· this was marketing for you to feel good · mearsheimer played the entire left
side of the chart the kitchen drew yesterday · he hit every approved attack
surface and avoided every unspeakable · the only winner is the seminary's
prestige · the harvard kennedy school is the actual beneficiary · the kitchen
reads what the debate format actually accomplishes
The moment Mearsheimer confirmed he is cooked.
Pompeo, on stage, threw the seminary's standard sentimental gotcha - Iran killed
Europeans - and Mearsheimer was handed the structural opening of his career.
Mearsheimer's reply: many countries do bad things, including my own. I don't
call them monsters.
The kitchen's response is one sentence.
Well, maybe you should.

What Mearsheimer just confirmed.
Mearsheimer just confirmed, on stage, in front of an audience, on the record,
that he will not call the empire a monster. He will not call the EDW a
monster. He will not call the dispensationalist architecture a monster. He will
not say fuck the troops. He will not break a single idol. He will not commit to
any structural rupture. He will not endanger any future appointment by saying,
plainly, the thing that needed to be said in that moment.
His credibility is now zero.
Not zero with the seminary - the seminary has already cataloged him as
usable. Zero with anyone reading him as a structural critic of the
empire. Mearsheimer just publicly negotiated the terms of his own institutional
reabsorption in real time, and the negotiation was: I will criticize policy, I
will not name the architecture, I will be available for the next administration.
Anti-imperialists who watched this and felt that Mearsheimer "won" because
Pompeo and Nuland looked bad have been managed. The managing is the entire
purpose of the debate format.

The chart Mearsheimer played right into.
The kitchen drew a chart yesterday naming the approved attack surfaces and the
unspeakable.
The approved attack surfaces - the things the seminary allows you to criticize
and still book you on stages - include: the 1953 Mossadegh overthrow, "regime
change is bad," "neocons are dangerous," "the foreign-policy establishment makes
mistakes," "we should talk to Iran," "sanctions hurt civilians," "the Iraq war
was a blunder."
The unspeakable - the things that, if you say them, get you removed from the
booking list - include: fuck the troops, defund the VA, the EDW is a monster,
the empire is a monster, the dispensationalist architecture is the engine, the
evangelical Disney World, fuck the teachers, fuck the seminary's tenured class,
the produced polises are the just war and the empire is the genocide.
Mearsheimer hit the entire left column of the chart. Every approved attack
surface, on cue, in academic language, with the credentialing veneer that allows
the YouTube anti-imperialist audience to feel that something substantial was
said.
Mearsheimer touched none of the right column. Not one item. He had the
structural opening to call the empire a monster - Pompeo handed it to him - and
Mearsheimer declined. He had decades of scholarly authority as cover for
breaking an idol - and he used the authority to preserve the idols instead.
This is what the chart was for. The chart was the map of what controlled
opposition looks like inside the seminary's discourse, and Mearsheimer is now
the fully credentialed exhibit.
