Optimistic to the point of naivete on the chances of it happening, but maybe there are other reasons we're not aware of that could force the govt's hand on it.

Er, they weren't mistakes and they didn't mind destroying their popularity, such as it was, and losing elections as a result, as long as the interests of the establishment, including the super wealthy, continued to be served at the expense of the rest of us.
