The Green Party has passed a motion declaring Zionism is racism at its annual conference. The motion, which was put forward by Greens for Palestine, was carried by 1,022 votes to 813 (55%–45%). It means the Green Party is now the first explicitly anti-Zionist party in the West.
The motion defines Zionism as “a political ideology which called for the creation—and, now it exists, the continuation—of an ethnonationalist Jewish State in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/or domination of the non-Jewish population,” and states that this will be treated as any other form of racism.
It commits the party to supporting “the establishment of a single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, equal rights for all, and the right of return for Palestinians and their descendants.”
The motion faced nauseating opposition from some senior figures in the Green Party, like Ellie Chowns, Adrian Ramsey, Caroline Lucas, and Carla Denyer. They told us the usual crap about how this was all nuanced and too complicated for us simpletons to understand.
Adrian Ramsey insisted the motion doesn’t reflect Green principles. Someone needs to explain to him how votes work. He doesn’t decide what Green values are—the members do.
The media’s calling the motion “controversial” to give impression it’s something sinister. They’re implying the genocidal ideology isn’t controversial—opposition to it is. The Daily Mail has gone a step further, telling us the Greens are the UK’s first openly antisemitic party. Someone needs to remind them you’re not supposed to conflate Zionism and Judaism.
We’re told over and over that Zionism is just Jews wanting a homeland, but it’s not. It’s Jews wanting someone else’s homeland. Founder of the World Zionist Organisation Theodor Herzl wrote of his ethnic cleansing plans way back in 1895:
When we occupy the land, we shall bring immediate benefits to the state that receives us. We must expropriate gently the private property on the estates assigned to us.
We shall try to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries, while denying it any employment in our own country.
The property-owners will come over to our side. Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly.
Let the owners of immovable property believe that they are cheating us, selling us things for more than they are worth. But we are not going to sell them anything back.
It’s deplorable that the media and politicians are conflating this colonial ideology with Judaism. The establishment of Israel was opposed by prominent Jews such as Judah Magnes, Martin Buber, Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Gershom Scholem, Edwin Montagu, Claude Montefiore, Lucien Wolf, Lessing Rosenwald, Elmer Berger, Alfred Lilienthal, Isaac Mayer Wise, Yoel Teitelbaum, Amram Blau, and Vladimir Medem.
Here are some of the arguments these figures put forward:
Judah Magnes, first president of the Hebrew University, told the UN commission that partition would mean war on the Arabs.
Martin Buber, philosopher, argued a state imposed on the Arab population betrayed the point of the return. He favoured a shared Arab–Jewish polity.
Albert Einstein opposed “a Jewish state with borders, an army, and a measure of temporal power.”
Hannah Arendt warned that a state built without Arab consent would depend on outside force and could not be a democracy of equals.
It’s disingenuous to pretend that Zionism used to be cuddly and only started doing bad things when Netanyahu came along. There’s no nice way to support an ideology that from its inception spoke of driving the natives out of their homeland to make way for Jews. Zionism is evil both in principle and practice.
When Zionists finally got their way in 1948, they carried out a genocide that killed 13,000 Palestinians and displaced 750,000. They bussed Palestinians into concentration camps and moved into their homes. Apparently, God promised them those homes 3,000 years ago!
Ever since 1948, Zionists have not stopped killing and displacing Palestinians and denying them the right to return. Ask an Israeli what ideology they’re following when they bomb Gaza and they will tell you it’s Zionism. If you pretend Zionism is somehow separate from the crimes of Israel, you’re not interested in having an honest conversation.
Over 90% of Israelis support their government’s actions in Gaza, or think they haven’t gone far enough. That’s the reality of Zionism. It’s not complicated and it’s not nuanced.
