The most telling thing about the backlash against the Greens’ “Zionism is racism” motion is the refusal of the media to platform Palestinians. We’ve had wall-to-wall coverage centring the feelings of Zionists, but we’ve heard almost nothing from their victims.
The people who are being deprived of food, water, medicine, power, shelter, sanitation, safety, and dignity because Zionists “yearned for a homeland” in Palestine are also being deprived of a voice. That in itself is a form of racism, yet the media would have you think Zionists are the victims here.
The Palestinians are denied self-determination and their homeland is being destroyed. Palestine is not allowed to exist. Meanwhile we’re told: Jewish self-determination is a right! Zionism just means Jews wanting a homeland! This motion is an attack on Jews!
All of these arguments conflate Zionism and Judaism, something we’ve been told for decades we must not do.
Angela Rayner posted the following on Twitter:
Today’s vote at the Green Party Conference crosses a line and is rightly being condemned across the political spectrum.
Labour will continue working to ensure Jewish communities are safe and have their rights upheld. We must rid our society of the scourge of antisemitism.
Firstly, whenever political parties agree on something, that’s not a positive sign. It’s evidence that we don’t have a political spectrum. We have a political establishment. If the entire establishment is ganging up on you, it means you’re probably on the right side of history.
Secondly, to imply that an attack on Zionism is an attack on Jews is to argue that Zionism and Jews are one and the same. Zionism (a 130-year-old ideology) is not Judaism (a 3,500-year-old religion). An estimated 70-90% of Zionists are Christians. There are some Zionists of other faiths and of no faith. Therefore, anti-Zionism is not antisemitism.
The misrepresentation of the Greens’ motion has been off the charts. It defines Zionism as the political ideology behind an ethnonationalist Jewish state that has led to apartheid and genocide. It affirms the Palestinian right of self-defence, and supports a single democratic state in all of historic Palestine, with equal rights for all, and the right of return for Palestinians and their descendants.
The media insists the motion calls for violence against Jews while Zionists bomb Palestinians daily. We’re told that equality for all would somehow be unfair on Israelis. We’re told to back a two-state solution that will never be allowed to happen, when we have a one-state reality.
Everything they accuse anti-Zionists of is a projection because an honest conversation cannot be allowed to happen. This is a red line for the establishment. Every other form of colonialism has been delegitimised. Zionism is the one they’ve managed to cling to.
We’re now hearing talk of the EHRC investigating the Greens like it investigated Labour under Corbyn. It’s super-interesting how the EHRC ignores the rampant racism in every other major party, isn’t it?
Apparently, a number of Labour MPs have reported the Greens to the police! It’s just ludicrous. They’re gonna do everything in their power to ban us from opposing a political ideology. Fortunately, the David Miller court victory shows the law’s not on their side.
I shouldn’t have to say this, but political parties can support or oppose any ideology they like. That’s the whole point of political parties! If the Greens are forced to accept Zionists, what next? Should they be forced to accept conservatives? What about people opposed to environmentalism? Where do we draw the line?
Given the attacks from the media, you’d hope anti-Zionists would unite. Therefore, it’s a shame to see the optics left lay into the Greens, even though they agree Zionism is racism. They’re acting like this motion is some sort of own goal, like it’s about the Greens themselves rather than the struggle against genocide and imperialism.
Here’s the thing: the motion is only an own goal if we make it one. If we show solidarity and argue for the morally correct position, we can change minds. Why? Because many have never heard the truth. If you explain what Zionism was from its inception, what it did the moment it took power, and what it has done ever since, many will realise they’ve been lied to.
The motion only becomes an own goal when those with big platforms drive a wedge between us to boost their TV opportunities. That only serves the Zionists who want to paint the Greens as a bunch of clueless cranks. It’s the very opposite of solidarity.
What’s the point of saying you agree in principle, if you don’t want to upset our opponents? When will be the right time to fight? When Gaza is no more? Zionism is a real problem with real victims who are dying daily. If we can’t identify the ideology driving a genocide, we can’t hope to stop it.
