Netanyahu has edged out his rivals in the Israeli elections. This comes as a huge disappointment to those who wanted to rehabilitate Israel by pinning the country’s crimes on one man. Everyone else knew it would make no difference whoever ends up in charge.
The elections had a record 77.7% turnout. Exit polls had predicted a bad night for Netanyahu to the delight of liberals who pretend they were never on his side. An excited Emily Thornberry jumped the gun, posting that Israel has rejected Netanyahu’s dark vision, forever war and cruel, dystopic, authoritarian policies.

The "anti-Netanyahu block" is also pro-genocide, Emily

Israeli Exit Polls show Netanyahu's been defeated.
Israel has rejected his dark vision, forever war & cruel, dystopic, authoritarian policies.
But to succeed, the anti Netanyahu block needs to work with the Israeli Arab parties.
I dearly hope this great chance isn't wasted

It wasn’t that Thornberry wanted to believe this. It’s just that by rehabilitating Israel, she could rehabilitate herself. This is the woman who’d previously backed Keir Starmer on BBC Newsnight when he said Israel has a right to cut off food, water, and medicine from Palestinians.
Netanyahu looks set to cling to power with Likud emerging as the biggest party, even though his bloc will fall short of a majority. It looks set to take 54 seats while the opposition looks set for 49.
This means Netanyahu will remain caretaker prime minister until a deal can be struck that should keep him in power. Yes, the man who has served 19 years as prime minister is probably gonna serve a few more. He’s like the turd that just won’t flush.
The one thing that could keep him out of power would be the opposition doing a deal with Arab parties, but they’re ruling that out. Zionist parties are far closer to each other than to any party that sees Arabs as equals.
Netanyahu was quick to remind everyone that what unites Zionist parties is love of apartheid. He said: “We need to form a national right wing government” that should not rely on Arab parties “that are against our existence”.
He added: “The Zionist majority in the state of Israel should be united, as it’s the only way to guarantee the future of Israel.” The Labour government still thinks you’re racist if you oppose this mentality by the way.
Clearly, Netanyahu has outperformed expectations in an election that was described as a referendum on his leadership. We keep getting told it’s not the Israeli people. It’s not Zionism. It’s just Netanyahu.
Well, Zionists clearly approve of his slaughter of Palestinians, Lebanese, Syrians, Yemenis, Iranians, and even Israelis. His only serious rival was Eisenkot, the former IDF chief who is portrayed as a moderate but attacked him from the right.
Eisenkot’s the guy who came up with the Dahiya Doctrine—this means Israel destroys a whole Lebanese village if a single rocket is fired from it. In case you didn’t know, there are no moderates in Israel.
It’s fair to say this election result was a miraculous turnaround for Netanyahu. Yesterday he had a public meltdown, claiming Hamas was stealing the election from him. Given that this accusation was baseless, you can assume the same about his other recent outbursts. The man’s only means of persuasion is fear.

Netanyahu seemed to be in panic mode about those court cases hanging over him, but this result means he stays out of jail. If ever you’re in trouble with the law, just run for office. It’s your best shot.
The first thing Netanyahu did when it looked like victory was assured was talk about another war with Iran. He talked of Israel’s “sacred mission” which he described as “a singular historical opportunity, together with our partner President Trump, to remove the existential threat of Iran once and for all.”
This means everything’s gonna get even more expensive. Just don’t say that out loud or you’ll get the backlash that Cenk Uyghur got when he made that campaign ad for Abdul—the one about how every American gives $160 a year to Israel. That works out at about $3,000 per Israeli, so AIPAC’s getting a massive return on its investment here.
We’re heading for an incredibly dark 2027, but at least Bernie Sanders is happy. He can refer to the looming apocalypse as “Netanyahu’s war” and let Israel off the hook as the global economy collapses. If a new Israeli prime minister did this it would spoil the narrative. It would force Israel’s apologists to confront the reality that Zionism is the problem.
The one plus from the election is that Arab parties have taken a record 19 seats. If not for their strong performance, Netanyahu would probably have secured a majority. The fury in Israel was palpable, with one well-adjusted individual comparing the result to October 7. Yes, even Arabs voting counts as terrorism now.
Israelis are split between saying Arabs voting is terrible—and saying this proves there is no apartheid. The second argument sounds clever if you ignore that Israel’s only had four Arab ministers in its history and has just tried to ban Arab parties from standing in the elections. Israelis even went into Arab polling stations to stop them from voting.
There is also the small detail that 5.5 million Palestinians are not allowed to vote for the government that rules over them. That’s the only democracy in the Middle East for ya, folks.
