A new thing I am experiencing is, when I try to set up an account with a bank or insurance company (something I've not done for a while), there are questions about the past ("what city have you lived in?" With options, or which if these sis an address you have lived at?").

It could be a set of perfectly benign security questions to show i am a real person. But this cannot possibly be true: A non-real person doesn't give away money like to a bank or to an insurance company.

More likely, it seems, the borg has holes in its knowledge and pays these institutions to get an actual person to confirm the connections, in return for a fee.

I kinda don't so much mind a bank doing it, since they could legitimately want to check for any record of money laundering etc. But an insurance company ... If you are setting up an account just to pay a bill, the only thing that matters is your current address.

Avoiding talking about your history before the internet arrived is a matter of personal hygiene.
