While the US deployment, which began in Iraq and was notionally legal as at the invitation of the Iraqi government, began in Syria without anyone bothering to invent a pretext or justification - IS was based in Raqqa, which was why they put it there, and are now still there with their SDF. What is interesting here is that the US excuse now resembles that of Australia's, which James O'Neill has repeatedly questioned in various forums. Australia claimed it was going into Syria because it was ungoverned space where IS fighters could launch attacks on Iraq, but in fact the Iraqi government didn't agree to any Status of Forces rule so Australian forces are all there on diplomatic passports. Today there is another development, confirming suspicions that the Iraqi government is not in agreement with the US new redeployment, and unlikely to cooperate with it in "fighting IS", leave alone "Iranian militias". All members of Iraq's parliament are angry at Trump's uninvited visit, and demanding that US troops leave Iraq now IS is defeated: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/dec/27/iraq-trump-visit-us-troops-lawmakers-demand-leave Here in OZ, noone has asked our leaders or even thought to ask them why we are staying in Iraq, or whether we have plans to leave, or join in the next illegal war on Iran.
