    Thanks all, much appreciated

@David, I hadn't heard about the II connection, v. interesting if not entirely surprising. Funny to see HSBC emerge again - they must have big leverage on the media to keep these stories under wraps, like the tax fraud story x years ago as the article notes. RT putting UK media to shame again... Hadn't heard the analysis of trying to undermine russian gas either, so something to think about there too. Had a friend in Alton a while back, seemed like a nice area. Haven't heard about any oil prospecting happening there so maybe it's got away with it.

@Spike - thanks, yes I was glad to get that point in there to maybe unlock some more resistance from fence-sitters who feel to guilty at present. I don't know if this idea of supply driving demand is recognised in economics at all, but I've started noticing it in more and more walks of life. Mobile phones would be another big example - manufacturers have flooded the world with phones and associated infrastructure to the point where most people (in the west at least) have no choice but to get one because so many essential day-to-day interactions are now organised around their availability. Computers and the internet too... I could carry on but I won't!

@Rhis, thanks as ever for the encouragement It feels like a swarm of Lilliputians tying down the giant Gulliver in his sleep. 'Retirement party' or planetary scale murder-suicide, we've got to stop it!

    cheers,
    I
