I'm pretty sure it is quite effective in their terms - this media bullshit sets the backdrop of what's going on for many people, even if unconsciously. The media are filled with stuff like AS and other non-policy based stuff to poison the well with people who don't follow this stuff closely - sure lots of people are more aware of media bullshit these days, but many still only watch BBC news for their news. Many people are fooled by this shite, or even if they aren't they absorb it as a general sense of chaos; which translates to them not wanting to support corbyn despite agreeing with his policies because 'he's not a leader' 'he's indecisive' 'he's scruffy' 'he's magic grandpa' or 'he's a racist' (another common one i see a lot is 'he's a brexiter' in media aimed at remainers, and 'he's trying to cancel brexit' in media aimed at brexiters). As has always been the way on the left, it's asymmetric - we'd have to win despite all this shite.
