As a dog connoisseur, I need to tell you margo that some poodles are very active indeed! But I agree with you Canada's role here and elsewhere goes way beyond just taking orders from Washington and is largely a reflection of the Canadian elite's own imperial interests, as I mentioned. The poodle analogy is still partially apt in that the US just needs to whistle to bring Justin and Chrystia to heel, and however aggressive or leading a role they seem to be taking, they remain largely a junior and subordinate partner. I suspect Freeland's own reactionary politics and sinister personal alliances, while they make her a perfect fit for the job, don't play a significant role in the policies themselves, which are pretty indistinguishable from those of the Harper government. So I look at her, less as a mover and shaker than as a typical canadian foreign minister: someone with no principles, no shame, little intelligence and total contempt for international law and human rights; someone who, like Kissinger, understands that the way to get ahead in the western political game is to be able to "articulate the consensus of power". Which she is quite able to do. She does seem more ambitious than most however, which means she'll go the extra mile in fulfilling her imperial duties.
