    sophisticated - and universally-enforced - recycling encounters quantity depletion, which has to be replaced. And the fresh resources to do that are still depleting, and getting more difficult and energy demanding to produce.

    There are multitudes of ways to create the sort of shift that you suggest, Shy. And yes, the technics of it are pretty straightforward and doable. The problem has always been, as now, getting a critical mass of humankind not just to sign up, but to insist. I still wait to see any sign of such a tidal wave of psychological will to do it. Meanwhile, the Long Descent continues, unchecked, moving inexorably towards a head-on collision with our current, temporary population overshoot - also still continuing for a bit longer.

    The only place of which I know that has attempted one-child families is China. And they've failed to make it work.
