I've been following this story on and off since it began and it's pretty disturbing. He (Smollet) has really done a lot of damage to a lot of causes, for want of a better word. I read that his motive appears to be to try and prevent his character being written out of the show he's in; the logic being they wouldn't dare axe such a I.D. pol box ticking "victim". Of course, this is possibly not the case (although I fail to see anything else that makes sense other than increasing his personal profile) but since the Chicago P.D. starting expressing doubts about the his account of the incident, the right-wing media in the states have been having a field day (I mean the Breitbart end of things, not the left wing of the Overton Window). If it does turn out to have been staged, real victims of hate crimes are going to find themselves doubted and discouraged even more. Even if he doesn't get have to do any time (potentially a big if), his career has to be absolutely toasted now, again assuming he is shown to have staged the incident. It's all incredibly stupid, selfish and sad. |
