We recently attended an event, put on by the London Review of Books, in which John Lanchester talked about his new book set in the near future when climate change has destroyed even more of our social and moral world. For Christmas the lrb had just offered its readers a deal on holidays in Italy. Flights were, of course, included. We now openly challenge our friends and relations' use of powered flight if they ever dare mention it. The response is usually an uncomfortable silence then change of subject, never an engagement with the problem or even an attempt to justify their actions. Most people appear incapable of contemplating the cumulative consequences of individual action. As for carbon offsets we discovered cheatneutral over ten years ago. It tells it like it is. We stopped running a car nearly twenty years ago so as not to burn fossil fuel etc. We now know two others who take the same line. La lutte continue but not for much longer...
