I didn't say he was a virgin or a passive victim of horrible people. It was always policy for the party to keep some pet lefties to parade to the constituencies of the great unwashed every election. Corbyn was one of the few remaining to chose from in a Labour party that systematically hunted down any other who stuck his/her head above the parapet. I've pointed out before that there is a often fatal sentimental tribal sense of belonging amongst the left of the labour party that is simply not reciprocated by the right who understand "Party" only in the sense of personal vehicle-to-power. Others have pointed out in this thread that this is probably Corbyn's real weakness and I tend to agree.
In Scotland we long ago had the egregious example of watching Labour attempt to destroy Dennis Canavan: another leftish social democrat who not only had a thumping majority in his Constituency, but the support of 97% of his local party members. Non the less the Labour elite deselected him by means of the stinkingly rank Gormenghast rule book and proceeded to humiliate his attempts at conciliation with the party at every turn. It became embarrassing to watch a man you actually admired allow himself to be treated publicly like a piece of shit on their shoes. To see him return yet again and again for more of the same was mortifying.
When Cananvan finally at long last got the message he decided to stand as an Independent: got expelled and the proceeded to walk away with the largest majority in Scotland - The whole sorry saga was a miniature of what was to come and harbinger of how Labour lost Scotland.
Its interesting to note that none of the present stramash would even be happening without the leadership of hapless Ed Milliband, who not only keep us out of a war against poor Syria, but gave Labours dispossessed constituency members the power to elect a leader under "one member one vote": the law of unintended consequences gave them Corbyn.
Labour is now essentially two parties fighting it out for Brand "Labour". Corbyn knows that prize is worth losing a few officers for, but he needs to deal with the main internal snipers before he has no one left trustworthy enough to delegate to. The problem is not only Corbyns tribal allegiance but yet again is the rule book. How does he get rid of someone like Tom Watson who seems determined to sabotage Labours election chances? As CJ pointed out, the Deputy Leader was voted in under the same one man one vote as Corbyn: oh them unintended consequences...
