As a teenage rebel I used to have lots of black chums. Our shared love of ska, bluebeat, reggae and weed soon pushed aside anything about the colour of our skins. I was mostly reddish-pink in Winter and a deep bronze colour in the summertime, whilst they remained the same, which pissed some of them off! Almost everyone had white mums and black dads, which I suppose defined them as mixed-race. So it was hard, if not absurd, for them to be 'racists' and hate white people. Mostly we thought that this 'race' stuff was bollocks. What really mattered wasn't the colour of your skin, but the colour or character of your heart. Among the Jamaican 'drug dealers' I knew, one guy stood out. He was from Jamaica and had long, fair dreadlocks. He spoke, like most of them, two dialects, white english and rasta english. His skin colour was whiter than mine, because like Bob Marley, his dad was white and his mum was black. But nobody in the community regarded him as... 'white' and he identified as 'black', 'black' because he came from a poor part of Kingston where black people lived. So he accepted an economic and social label about himself, his identity, not a specifically racial label. In fact I found most of my old chums were less concerned about 'race' than white liberals were and are, probably, as we used to say so often, most of this race stuff was bollocks, but underneath their lurked something else, something important, and that was class.
