What's frightening about the times we live in, isn't just the revival of 'racism', but nationalism and even tribalism. The Labour Party often refers to itself as a 'tribe.' This makes me feel uneasy. I heard Miliband say this. The Democrats and Republicans almost function as tribes too. As 'society' in the West seems to be disintegrating under the influence of the Marketplace, tribalism seems to be taking over, a lot reminds one of quasi-religious tribalism, which the Thirty Years War is a terrible example of what can happen when things really get out of hand. I don't think that our modern obsession with identity politics, and those who embrace it with fanaticism, fully understand or appreciate how dangerous these ideas can be.
