The Black Death was cataclysmic but didn't produce Utopia back in the 14th century Archived Message

I'd like to believe in Caitlin's philosophy but I just don't. Previous societies in other times have faced what must have seemed like Armageddon and yet Utopia still remained remarkable elusive. For those who faced the great plague, it must have seemed like the End Times - people who were alive and well on Monday were dead in a horrible way by Thursday. Whole hamlets and villages where everyone died. Survivors, who lost every member of their family and every friend and acquaintance, were highly motivated to create a different sort of society since it was widely believed that the plague was a divine punishment for the wickedness of the world. But no Utopia emerged. In the main those who benefit from the existing political and social set-up (the one to ten percent) will not give up their privileges because they have internalised a belief there is nothing that can affect them that they can't buy their way out of. Hence indifference about climate change and even nuclear war. I'm not a great believer in the "History teaches..." school but if history does teach anything, I'd say it's that revolutions are won by the organised. And that's what we are missing.
