The paradox of the British position has always been that one cannot have one's cake and eat it. Put very simply. One can't leave the European Union, but at the same time demand a special relationship that's advantageous for Britain at the expensive of Europe. That was never going to happen, couldn't happen and won't happen. Yet, this was the mirage that was sold to the British people during the referendum and for the last two years of May's negotiations. "I intend to leave the club and I won't be paying my fees anymore; but, I want to keep on using the club's heated swimming pool, the sauna and the bar."
