The world we live in is a very strange one indeed. Perhaps all empires or even civilizations enter this era or period, when the elaborate 'house of cards' is begining to sway, just before the fall? As an artist is difficult to describe what's happening accurately, because finding an artistic language that's adequate is really, really, hard. When one has moved into the phase of ultra-violence, grotesque hypocrisy, borderline madness, the witch-hunt, the mob marching, quasi-religious zealotry, profound narcism, political paralysis, the rise of the charlatan and frothing demagogues... words seem so useless confronted with the civilizational disintegration that surrounds us on all sides. Increasingly our civilsation seems to resemble anciet Rome, the population lulled and entertained, distracted by 'bread and circuses' only faintly aware of the borders under threat and the old certainties fraying and unravelling. Satire doesn't work anymore, because we seem to be living in a saterical world. Tragedy doesn't cut it because we're not ruled by flawed heroes, but by non-entities almost worthy of pity for their pretentions. When all that used to be 'good' is now turned into a parody of itself, the artist is left to wonder and weep. |
