The thing is, whether one approves or not, one can't run a country properly when the ruling elite are completely at odds with what the people want. Well, one can, but it's not exactly a recipe for harmony, but potential disaster. The people wanted something from Brexit that was not obtainable, not on the table and not possible. The people may have voted for Brexit, their fantasy version of it, egged on by demagogues and charlatans, only the Grand Wizzards couldn't work their bizarre magic on the rest of Europe, which wasn't under their spell. The fundamental and tragic error and paradox of Brexit, I think. The people, the elite who own and control the country, who have a real interest in it, don't want to leave the EU because there's no real money in it for them. It's all very well having this exercise in diredt democracy and allowing people to vent their anger and frustrations at the EU, but afterwards the ruling elite still own and run the country and they don't want to have to live with the consequences of this terrible and costly mess, this flight of nostalgic, nationalist, fancy.
