You unpacked that article well... I suspect this article is just so they can say they published something critical of the liberal media's role in Russiagate. Perhaps they realise Maddow and the rest have left them looking foolish beyond any kind of spin, so they need to concoct some vague apologetic criticism. Long after the time their critical journalistic questioning was required, they come out with this retro-active item that can be held up and waved about to future analysts as "brave, critical journalism ... what do you mean we're stenographers to power?!" Also, as you point out, there's that shifty little apologetic tone because, deep down, they know they've gone way beyond spin, to a place where content is woven from whole cloth.
