Unemployment in Turkey, for real, is way over 10% - and over 30% among young people. The Turkish lira lost 28% of its value in 2018 – and counting. Real inflation is over 20%. Erdogan turned the municipal elections into a referendum – about him, who else. The AKP machine set fire to a lot of foreign reserves trying to prop up the lira. To no avail – if the results in Istanbul and Ankara stand. The question is how Erdogan’s internal loss of prestige will translate in terms of Turkish foreign policy.
