The European Union *did* provide opposition to what was happening in Thatcher's Britain. Things would have been far worse without it. Only, because of Thatcher's oppostion to the EU's 'interference' in the internal and sovereign affairs of member states, the 'oppostion' was less effective than it could have been, due to British opposition. Also, ideologically and economically the 'successes' Thatcher's Britain helped he European 'children' and at the same time undermined European social democracy. So, Thatcher's minority support among the British people was perceived and translanted into what appeared to be a huge, European neo-liberal wave. It's rather sad that a set of policies and a rabid leader, despite widespread unpopularity in the UK can be transformed by FPTP into something like a 'revolution', which really resembeled a coup.
