I don't think that the 'paypacket' explanation really stands up to scrutiny. I think it's much worse than that. I think these people actually believe what they're saying. One can cut a deal with a cynic, it's 'idealists' one has to watch out for. The problem with 'mob rule' and 'media trials' is that they are extremely unpredictable and open to abuse, manipulation and moral frenzy. Real trials are much better, because the two sides are relatively equal in the courtroom and not least the defence can have its day and cross-examine the charges. Witch-hunts are terrible things, that should be avoided in a sane society. What's truly frightening is that today we seem to be moving away from 'rationality' and many of the modern principles of the englightenment, towards a new type of thinking, a new paradigme, where once again 'faith' and 'belief' as taking over. Hang the right kind of label around someone's neck and why bother with a trial? Assange is a creep. All creeps are guitly. Therefore Assange is guilty. That so many 'progressives' of the left or liberal kind, typified by the Guardian, basically accept 'quasi-relgious' dogmas, at the expense of rationality, my Truth is greater than your Truth, is a disturbing development.
