I think what Freedland, repeatedly, does in this series, The Long View, is to misrepresent the past, selectively, to make specific points about the present. There's something rather comforting to look backwards and see that, despite how 'bad' things seem now, don't worry too much, because it's all sort of happened before and we're all still here, aren't we?
