The result of the coming Peterborough by-election will have significance, especially if Labour do badly. Corbyn was always in a difficult position, and he wouldn't have been my ideal choice for leader, but, was there anyone else around? For him to be really effective and successful, his support should have been inside the PLP among the MPs, only it wasn't. They were probably 90% against him from the start. So he spent most of his time and energy just surviving from coup to coup. That his main base of support was outside parliament among the activists, was always... problematic. Corbyn wanted to keep the Labour Party together and not give the MPs an excuse and a platform to split the party and topple him from power. Stopping Corbyn was always their top priority. New Labour didn't want the return of Old Labour. Now, of course, it looks like the entire political structure that's existed for a century is in meltdown because of Brexit. This is unlucky for Corbyn. There's an opportunity now for a big re-alignment of British politics. The old parties disintegrate and new constelations are now possible. Like the creation of a big, new block in the 'centre' made up of the Liberals, which a big chunk of Labour MPs and lots of Tories too. The opposition will be Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party, whilst the Tory right and the Labour left will form a kind of nostalgic rump, with Corbyn perhaps the leader of Old Labour with just fifty MPs and that's being optimistic. This may not happen in quite the way I've outlined, but, if Brexit goes even wronger than it is at the moment, a lot can happen in the coming months and years ahead, and it could all happen quickly. Corbyn hasn't played his hand brilliantly though. I do think, that given the circumstances, he's given it his best shot. Unfortunately, as I've said before, that just wasn't good enough. Like Terresa May, he was out of his depth and the wrong man, in the wrong place at the wrong time.
