It tells one something about the times we live in, the climate of fear, complicity, servility, paranoia and hysteria, that the mainstream media is so reluctant to address... I agree, DJ, it reflects the times, but feelings (of paranoia and hysteria and servility) are no excuse whatsoever for media to be "reluctant" to perform basic reporting duties and provide basic factual data journalism. "A climate of [turbulent emotions] as an excuse for dereliction of duty amounts to a "dog ate my homework" excuse: big media which sells itself as a professional Fourth Estate needs to be called out on this. Regarding The Guardian's particular role (harking back to David Leigh's treacherous leaking of a password that Assange asked him to secure, etc) and its thoroughly inadequate, sloppy coverage of one of the most significant cases on the planet, I'd use a word like 'despicable' rather than 'miserable', to describe their output. |
