Some good reading on this: Archived Message

I'm working my way through "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" by Shoshana Zuboff which details how Google and Facebook made "behavioural surplus" (i.e. everything anyone does using their search engines, apps, obviously their phones, and increasingly the gadgets in the house) their product and in the process created the new form of capitalism in the title. Also, "Surveillance Valley" by Yasha Levine which covers some of the same ground but more. Both very interesting reads. The Zuboff one is written in an overly academic manner and (so far to me at least) seems a little disorganised but still a fascinating read.
