Thanks for updates, D and B.

Anyone familiar with UK law? What kind of sentence does one usually get for "jumping bail"? Isn't it more a case of a couple of three or four weeks, rather than 50? Not only was Assange rushed from the Ecuador Embassy to court the same day, not giving him time to prepare (as Melzer notes), but the sentence seemed truly disproportionate, aside from the judge's appalling psycho-babble labelling Assange a "narcissist". Astounding that the UK judiciary accepts the anomalies of this big case so passively. Aside from Assange's own lawyers, only the legendary human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce (79 years old now) has spoken out, but the Guardian and BBC, which might laud her at other times, seem to have ignored her comments.

    Commentator George Szamuely tweets:

"A man who is guilty of nothing [in UK] other than bail jumping, for which he has already forfeited his bond, is being treated the same as murderers, terrorists and child rapists. He's unable to prepare for his cases. And the Australian government is satisfied: viz:
Australian govt: "We are confident that Assange is being treated properly in Belmarsh Prison."

    Caitlin Johnstone tweets:

"Thank God Assange forced these assholes to fight for his head. If he'd just rolled over and gone to Sweden he'd have been extradited to the US in 2011-12 and the world would have forgotten about him by now. By fighting tooth and claw he's forced the machine to expose its ugliness".

    ------
That ugliness is not a good look for the world's leading democracies.
Never again will US, UK, Sweden be able to wave fingers at other countries ... to lecture them about press freedom and treatment of journalists and dissidents ... after we've all witnessed this atrocious treatment of Assange
