Another important point is that if one wants to be taken 'seriously' on the mainstream left, or in liberal circles, especially in the media as well as politics; one cannot run foul of the Guardian. The Guardian guards the boundary between what's acceptable for a left/liberal and what isn't. In a way it's obvious, the Guardian is really the only place left/liberals could go to present their views and get, on occasion, a fair hearing. The Guardian was, compared to the vicious right-wing bias of the rest of the press, a island, or more correctly a carefully controlled reservation where the left could speak out. But even that small oasis has now been brought under control and the Guardian is now only marginally less reactionary than the rest of the press in the UK. Totalitarian liberals, yeah! |
