I grew up among 'good people' in South Africa during the '70s and '80s: people who were convinced they were 'good', compared to others. They were smart; full of empathy and love for friends and family; known for their expansive bonhomie and humour; good to animals and children; keen on culture and charity foundations. In other words: upright citizens and regular folk. But they did terrible things during their working hours: overseeing rank mistreatment and disproportionately punitive actions; organising bureaucracies that turned an unblinking eye to suffering; signing off on deceptive wars and amoral arms deals; ordering journalists and publishers intimidated, smeared, indefinitely detained; etcetera. Strange now to see the prominent good families of the US,UK - who in the past condemned these South Africans and leveraged their removal - looking so eerily familiar ...
