I really like the idea of those ghastly hacks at the Guardian squirming around in the mire, trying to find a way to spin what's happening in Sweden, how it's all starting to fall apart because the structure was always so incredibly weak and fragile. The core, central fact, was the lack of specific charges not being brought against Assange after so many years, still.

The problem was never Assange. He wanted to be interviewed. The problem was always in Sweden. The weakness of the prosecutors' case. The Swedes have delayed and delayed the process, pressed by the British, not because the case was 'difficult' but because it was... non-existant. Only the Swedes could hide this by pretending that Assange was the problem. Only now it's all falling apart because the Swedes can't keep pressing the case, the investigation process, without bring charges any longer. The Swedish courts won't accept 'no charges' any longer. I don't think the prosecutors will appeal to a higher court. The moment the court, effectively, asks for charges and rejects the prosecutors demands for even more time and more draconian measures against Assange... that's basically the end of the road, finally. Because they don't really have any charges that the court won't throw out and refuse to prosecute. The Swedish judges have no intention of allowing mere state prosecutors, to 'bounce' them into a trial situation that hasn't a chance in hell of leading to a conviction, because no crime was actually committed.
