the following is long-ish but excellent:

    https://www.who.int/immunization/sage/meetings/2018/october/2_Ebola_SAGE2018Oct_BgDoc_20180919.pdf

The 2014 outbreak had 28,000 cases, the worst before that was 2000-Uganda with 425 cases (Appendix 1). Fearmongering? Really?

The danger with Ebola is the possibility it will develop decent human-human transmission. Currently it is pretty hard to catch.

The problem with the 2014 outbreak is it was a Zaire strain, but the outbreak was in west africa. This is strange, and also it explains why vaccines at the time were ineffective.

You can't test a vaccine for efficacy in humans (by vaccinating then giving the disease deliberately). You can only test for safetly in humans and efficacy in non-human primates.

There are now 13 candidate vaccines, including the three mentioned, by Orlov. All are at various stages of clinical trials. None have been proven protective in an outbreak. The Merck and Russian (gamevac combi) strategies are both excellent and both vaccines are promising.

You don't develop recombinant vaccines like these by "setting up tents in the outbreak area", what a larf!! Its all done in the lab in Russia or in the west, then tested later. Russia did a human SAFETY trial in Guinea. So did Merck.

So the story is that Russia has a state-of-the-art competotir to the US state-of-the-art vaccine. Its not a surprise.
