I think it's a telling indictement of the Guardian that their response to Melzer's scathing critique of multiiple states' persecution of an irritating journalist who dares to publish the truth about their colletive crimes against humanity, is so casually dismissive. Ther are 'sick' of people like Melzer. Not even a shred of an attempt to engage with him or examine his analysis, or, more importantly present it fairly so their readers can decide for themsleves.

James Balls reaction reminds one of the response of some fascist when confronted with allegations about there use of torture in their dungeons.

How did the Guardian slide into the mindset of fascism, the liberal's watchtower of freedom, which now looks increasingly like a watchtower from a prison camp.

The contrast between Melzer's testimony and the infromation presented by the Guardian in relation to Assange is so staggeringly different, that one is left stunned, that anyone can, with honour, continue to work there, let alone read the thing. Yet, in the UK, one doesn't get the feeling that liberals and the left, comprehend just how far the Guardian has lurched to the political right.
