The world is not sliding, but galloping into a new transnational dystopia. That is one possibility, the surveillance society, the global panoptican, that not only curtails speech and controls behaviour, but reaches into the inner recesses of the 'soul', a goal of institutional religion down the ages. The other and more likely option is collapse, stemming from environmental and other insults. It may be precipitous or gradual but one way or another it is probably inevitable. It will mean the end of civilisation as we have known it and, possibly, even human extinction. If humans survive, there will be a chance to reorient our lives more in harmony with the rest of nature. If it's a choice between a global totalitarian technodystopia, with the metaphorical boot stamping on the human face forever, or collapse and the suffering that comes with that, I would choose collapse.
