Over the last few decades what passes for liberal/progressive opinion and influence has declined and declined and declined, so now it barely exists, except as a faint echo of the past, during the fifties and sixities when it actually meant something compared to now. Liberal/progressives won't step up to defend Assange. The Guardian isn't gonna change its stance now. The Guardian represents liberal authoritarianism, their faith in the state as an authority, a protector in a dangerous world. The journalists aren't people of courage, but people who bow and make themselves useful and serve authority.
