The radio in my car is knackered and I can only get 5 Live and while I mainly listen to podcasts and stuff like that instead, sometimes I can't be bothered to sort that shit out and just put the radio on for something to listen to. What a cavalcade of nonsense was on tonight as I drove home. The leadership contest is being treated exactly like the world cup or any other knock out competition, complete with appropriate analogies like 'still in the game' and 'all to play for'. They must have devoted most of the three hour drive show to this drivel as each candidates' lackies came on and explained away whatever had happened to their boy. Normally the media tries to maintain at least a degree of decorum and professionalism but that's all out the window when it comes to this. In a way it's genius. Reduce the whole thing down to a sport like event and then treat it as a trivial matter, like a sporting event, something to be endlessly talked over. Amazing. Meanwhile everything else is off the table; unimportant. The title of the 'debate' last night between the candidates was 'Our Next Prime Minister', hosted on the BBC. What better expression of the one party state in the UK. |
