Well, I'd argue that the negative response to this article, which elegantly demolishes the entire state/corporate media 'case' against Assange; by itself, illustrates the point Melzer makes, that the treatment and precedent of Assange, has 'sealed the fate of Western democracy.' I think the long era of liberal Western democracy is over definitively and now we're in the era of the national security state which hasn't got room for dissent or people challenging the power sructure of society.
