The 5th World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC) just been held in Paris from July 9 to July 11. "Three days, 600 journalism educators, 70 countries, innumerable ideas". UNESCO listed cheek-by-jowl with US/Soros "Open Society Foundation" as prime partners at event. "Digital global collaboration", "business models", "entrepreneurship" are key words. Quaint phrases like "holding power to account", "getting to the truth", "watchdog media", "investigative journalism", "what Wikileaks pioneered and proposed iro digital journalism", "including Chomsky and Parenti's media commentary in curriculum" and "tackling propaganda- from all sides" .... don't seem to feature. Nevertheless, the Paris Declaration of Freedom of Journalism Education incorporates some important points. It pays lip-service, at least, to co-operating with UN ideals... even as western nations continue to ignore so many UN statements and resolutions. |
