Thanks for that SB, that was fascinating. Some really interesting history there that makes me want to read Immerwahr's book. The part about Roosevelt tailoring his pronouncements after "Pearl Harbour" to obscure the fact that Japan's attack was on multiple US colonies was very interesting. It reminded me of a satirical skit the US Communist Party put on in 1939 that Howard Zinn quotes in his People's History: We, the governments of Great Britain and the United States, in the name of India, Burma, Malaya, Australia, British East Africa, British Guiana, Hong Kong, Siam, Singapore, Egypt, Palestine, Canada, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Virgin Islands, hereby declare most emphatically, that this is not an imperialist war. |
